Students are required to be reading each 9 weeks and should have an AR book with them at all times. Reading can take you to many places both real and imaginary. You can also learn many things! There are lots of books in my classroom library as well as the schools library, so they do have options and a vast selection that they can read from! One requirement is for students to read grade appropriate books. Books should not be more than one grade level above/below their reading level. Reading levels are based off of their AR STAR reading tests. Books can be found on the AR website: http://www.arbookfind.com/UserType.aspx. There is a weekly goal that students must reach or they will be benched. I have found that this encourages students to read, otherwise they just blow it off and they settle for the "F" grade. The weekly goal is usually 1 point per week. Students have the opportunity to read in the morning after breakfast, in homeroom, often in class, during academic lab, and at home.
